Common Mistakes That Lead to Tongue Bite
Tongue bite is one of the most common problems for beginners. It is usually caused by smoking too fast, tobacco that is too moist, and packing the bowl too tightly.
What is tongue bite?
Tongue bite is a burning or irritating sensation on the tongue during or after smoking a pipe. Beginners encounter it very often and may think the pipe is the problem, even though the cause is usually technique.
Smoking too fast
The most common mistake is puffing too quickly. When the pipe overheats, the smoke becomes sharper and hotter, increasing the chance of irritating the tongue.
Tobacco that is too moist
Moist tobacco creates more steam and condensate. That can intensify the burning sensation and make comfortable smoking harder, especially if the smoker tries to keep the ember alive by drawing harder.
Poor packing and impatience
If the bowl is packed too tightly, the smoker has to pull harder. If it is too loose, it is harder to keep lit. In both cases, the result is often forced smoking. The best prevention is a slower rhythm, gentle puffs, and patience while finding a personal routine.
